Outdoor Pursuits
Outdoor Pursuits is an option that pupils can choose as part of the Senior Games programme for Years 12-14. The year commences usually with a fun afternoon where pupils experience the thrills and spills of Banana Boating and an inflatable Assault course.
The group then begin a course covering the combined disciplines of Canadian Canoeing and Kayaking in the Six Mile river and Lough Neagh. This is an exciting time as many have never experienced this before. This allows pupils the opportunities to learn the kayaking and canoeing skills required to receive their British Canoe Union 1- star award.
During term 1 other activities include Laser Quest and Orienteering.
Before Christmas some budding racing drivers are given the opportunity to exhibit their driving skills at a Go-karting Grand Prix.
In terms 2 and 3 pupils have a series of Pool Sessions at the Six Mile Leisure Centre where individuals are able to develop different types of paddle stroke and practice capsize drill and rescues in much warmer water! This enables them to build their confidence before venturing outside on to open water again in the kayaks.
Outdoor Pursuits helps pupils to develop confidence in their own ability and experience teamwork as they try many new activities for the first time.
