As part of the CCEA GCSE Biology course, pupils take part in fieldwork in the school grounds, where they work in small groups to do a variety of sampling techniques. These include:
- Pitfall traps
- Sweep nets
- Beating trays
A Level Fieldwork
During the AS course, pupils study the importance of biodiversity and have a fieldtrip to Greenmount Agricultural College in Antrim to show how biodiversity can be measured. They learn identification skills and sampling techniques which are then applied to their Biology course, such as the Simpson’s Index of Diversity.
BT Young Scientist
This competition, which has been running in Dublin for over half a century, has established itself as probably the leading school science competition in Europe. Most years here in Ballyclare High School we enter pupils into this competition and we have enjoyed success in a number of categories.
Society of Biology Competition
Every year we enter Year 11 pupils into the Biology Challenge run by the Society of Biology. It is an online competition which aims to encourage an interest in biology beyond the school curriculum and stimulate curiosity in the natural world.
