English
“I read for pleasure, and that is the moment at which I learn the most.” (Margaret Atwood)
It is the aim of the English Department in Ballyclare High School to ensure that pupils’ experience of learning is enjoyable and beneficial.
Three priorities underpin the teaching of English in this school:
- To create the circumstances in which pupils grow to enjoy the subject and achieve their academic potential;
- To fulfil the aims of the school by nurturing lifelong learning in a caring, creative community;
- To meet the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum in a creative and effective manner.
Each of the principles stated above should be complementary and combine to create a basis of good classroom practice for the teacher and a fulfilling education for the pupil.
In agreement with the ethos defined by the Education and Training Inspectorate, we seek to be a Department in which,
“Pupils are interested in learning; they have expectations of success, they have the confidence to take risks, make mistakes and ask for help.”
