Chemistry

Chemistry – it’s in everything and everywhere. By its very nature, the world and everything around us – air, water, the ground beneath us, the infinite number of things and technologies we use every day, as well as our own living tissue – is chemistry in motion.

Everything in the universe (including you) is composed of various combinations of just 100 or so atoms. The wonder of chemistry is that these building blocks can arrange themselves into an amazing number of different combinations to make something new and unique. Understanding how to predict and explain how they change to form new substances is what chemistry and chemists are all about.

Chemistry is not limited to beakers and laboratories. It is all around us, and the better we know chemistry, the better we know our world. For chemists, it is becoming increasingly important to be green; applying the principles of green chemistry to allow economic and environmental progress to proceed in harmony.

When the science of chemistry is applied, it helps make the lives of people throughout the world safer, healthier and more productive. The business of chemistry transforms the natural raw materials of the earth, sea and air into all of the products that we use in modern life and thousands more that chemists are developing everyday.
