Match Report: Saturday 23rd November v Friends

By Ballyclare High School on 28 November, 2019

The first quarter began quite slowly in the 1stXI match, although both teams managed a number of attacks. On one of these occasions the Ballyclare attacking play was broken down, which led to a counter attack by Friends who scored the first and only goal of the match. With greater pace in the second half, Ballyclare won several penalty corners in the remaining two quarters of the game but were unable to convert them. The goalkeepers on both sides were forced to make some good saves. Despite playing very well all around the pitch and creating plenty of opportunities, Ballyclare were unable to find a reply to the early Friends goal. Niamh Hogan was player of the match for some excellent saves during the game.

Good work from the Ballyclare 2AXI in the first two quarters of their game resulted in plenty of pressure in the Friends circle, including a penalty corner, but unfortunately with no result. After half time, a penalty corner in the third quarter was well converted by Kaitlyn Meredith-Gault to put Ballyclare 1-0 up. Friends responded well, winning a corner of their own, but it was well defended by Ballyclare. Further skilled defending resulted in a clean sheet for Ballyclare, with the one earlier goal proving decisive. Abigail Kennedy was player of the match, working hard in defence to clear the ball out of the circle.

Despite a positive start with some pressure on the Friends goal, the U14A team found themselves 1-0 down at half time. Rachel Cox hit the post in a good effort to equalise in the second half but, although Ballyclare kept a good intensity, Friends scored twice more from short corners. The final score was a 3-0 loss, with Scarlett Dunn player of the match.

The U14B team were evenly matched with their Friends counterparts and the score was 0-0 at half time. Within five minutes of the restart Friends had scored from a penalty corner, but although Ballyclare won three corners of their own, they were unable to find a reply. Katie Wasson and Lea-Rose Cleland were players of the match for their strong defensive work.
