Golf: Ross Campbell and Ewan McArthur have been selected to play for Ulster

By Ballyclare High School on 12 September, 2017

Ross Campbell and Ewan McArthur of  Year 11, were selected to represent The Golfing Union of Ireland Ulster Team (6 man team) for the Interprovincial Championships at Blarney Golf Resort, Co Cork from 23rd-26th July 2017. Unfortunately the team lost to Leinster but put up a good fight, finishing joint 2nd with Connaught and Munster.  Ross won his first singles match but the duo lost their foursomes. Ross took Brandon St John up to the 18th green losing by 1 hole in his third match, having hoped for a half. This was an unexpected outcome to the delight of the team, GUI Team Coach and Manager. Ewan  was also selected to play for Ireland in The Reid Trophy. Ross earned his spot on the Ulster team after being knocked out of the semi-final of the Ulster Closed at Newtownstewart, at the end of June by Joshua Hill’s hole-in-one at the 15th. He also finished 3rd place in the Munster Under 14s Open, shooting 4 over. This was good progress for Ross this year in the GUI tournaments and a goal he set himself with his coach.  He didn’t dare to hope February would be a reality, so Ballyclare High School is delighted by the outcome! Next year, Ross moves up into the Under 16 age group competing in a  tougher field so he anticipates the months ahead will be an exciting challenge!
