Electric Ireland Super Schools Festival

On Wednesday the 12th June the girls’ football teams from Years 8-11 travelled to Mallusk playing fields to take part in the Northern Ireland’s super schools festival. There was over 120 teams entered into the competition, each trying to become cup winners. Our year 10 & 11 team started the tournament strongly as they managed to win all of their group games comfortably. They beat last year’s winners Holycross, along with St Colmcilles and Integrated College Dungannon to top the group and go through to the knockout stage of the competition. The girls played some fantastic football and managed to score 14 goals in total in their group games without conceding any. The goals came from Megan Cochrane, Grace Montgomery, Erin McCauley and Rhyleigh Marks. The girls then faced St Cecilia in the quarter final and full of confidence the girls went on to win 4-0. The semi-final was a much closer affair which finished 0-0 and went to the dreaded penalty shootout. Grace Montgomery and Caitlin Welsh calmly slotted home while Lauren Welsh made two fantastic saves to send the girls through to the final. With it all to play for the girls went out to win and after some excellent team play, managed to score through Grace Montgomery. Nerves understandably set in but the girls managed to see out the game and hold onto their lead with some quality defending. The final whistle blew and the celebrations began. Scoring 19 goals in total and not conceding any in all of the games they played this was a fantastic team effort with everyone playing their part. They received their medals from the current Northern Ireland team captain Marissa Callaghan and then Grace lifted the cup as the Ballyclare girls were crowned champions.
