It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former member of staff, Mrs Margaret McKeown.

Margaret joined the staff of Ballyclare High School in December 1984, following her studies at the University of Ulster at Coleraine as a mature student. Over the many years that followed, she made an enormous contribution to the life of our school.

As a teacher of Chemistry and Biology, Margaret brought enthusiasm, expertise and high standards to her teaching. She taught O Level and GCSE Chemistry and Biology, as well as A Level Chemistry, inspiring generations of pupils and supporting them with her caring and sympathetic approach.

Margaret was also deeply involved in the wider life of the school. For many years, she played an active role in Scripture Union, including accompanying pupils on weekend trips, and she was instrumental in the development of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Ballyclare High. From the early days of the scheme, she played a leading role in its organisation and administration, contributing greatly to the excellent reputation the school developed within the DofE community.

In 2000, Margaret took on the role of Assistant Head of Year for our incoming Year 8 pupils. Drawing on her own experience as a mother, she provided a caring and understanding presence for many young people as they settled into secondary school, helping them through difficulties and always offering a sympathetic ear.

Margaret was equally cherished by her colleagues. Within the Chemistry Department, she was affectionately described as a ‘mother hen’, always ready with a kind word, practical support and encouragement when it was needed most.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, James, and her children, Mark, Elaine and Jonny, and their families, at this very sad time.

Margaret gave so much to Ballyclare High School over more than two decades of dedicated service. She will be remembered with great affection by the many pupils, colleagues and families whose lives she touched.

Our Annual Distribution of Prizes took place last night, bringing together pupils, parents and staff to celebrate the achievements of our pupils across academic, sporting, musical and extra-curricular life.

We were delighted to welcome back proud alumna and Ballyclare High School Foundation Trustee, Mrs Emma Matebalavue, as our guest speaker. Now a Partner and Head of Global Financial Markets at Clifford Chance, Emma reflected warmly on her time at Ballyclare High and the people who have inspired and shaped her throughout her life.

Her words encouraged our pupils to recognise the influence others can have on their journey, to make the most of the opportunities around them and, above all, to have courage and be kind.

Thank you, Emma, for sharing your experiences, wisdom and encouragement with us, and for your continued connection with Ballyclare High.

Today’s announcement by the Minister for Education marks an exciting moment for our school community, as our long-held ambition for a new school build moves forward once again, with the planning and design process commencing immediately.

Principal Dr Michelle Rainey said:

“As Principal, I am thrilled by the Minister’s announcement of a new school build. This is a significant milestone for our school community and the culmination of considerable work and determination to shape the conversations around the future of education provision in Ballyclare.

Through the Minister’s foresight, a long-held ambition is now moving towards becoming a reality! His announcement heralds much-needed new accommodation for our pupils, and the commitment to new accommodation across a number of local schools undoubtedly affords a golden opportunity to provide top-quality educational provision in Ballyclare that will serve many generations of pupils to come.

While we look firmly to the future with great excitement for what’s to come, we remain equally ambitious for the pupils in front of us today. We are committed to ensuring that our current pupils benefit from the very best environment possible, with continued investment in our existing facilities reflecting the high expectations and ambitions we have for each and every one of our young people.”

If you’re Dublin-based, or know a former pupil who is, please tag them, share this post and help us spread the word.

To register your interest, contact sandara@ballyclarehighfoundation.co.uk.

We’d love to hear from you!
