Public Speaking & Debating

“It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.”

At Ballyclare High School, we provide pupils with the opportunity to develop and refine their public speaking skills, fostering confidence and effective communication. Public speaking is not only an essential life skill but also one that builds personal resilience, critical thinking, and the ability to present and defend ideas in front of others. These skills are invaluable in both academic and professional settings, and we encourage our pupils to take part in various competitions and events to enhance their abilities.

Our pupils regularly excel in external public speaking competitions, demonstrating their talent and dedication. For example, we have participated in the Bar Mock Trial Competition at Laganside Courts, where pupils compete with schools from across Northern Ireland. Preparation for this prestigious event involves intensive practice and teamwork, allowing pupils to hone their argumentation and presentation skills in a real-world setting. Beyond the Bar Mock Trial, pupils are also encouraged to take part in public speaking events and debates throughout the year, which help to further develop their communication skills.

These experiences are incredibly beneficial for our pupils, as they learn to work as part of a team, think critically, and express their thoughts with clarity and conviction. Public speaking not only boosts their academic performance but also prepares them for future challenges, both in their education and in their careers.
