A-Level

CCEA AS/A2 in PE provides a course of study that is a natural progression for candidates who have studied GCSE PE and who may wish to continue the subject in a vocational direction or to a higher education course. It integrates diverse theoretical fields whilst seeking to prepare the pupil for further study or the world of work. It encourages interest in sports science and the active leisure industry specific to Sport and Recreation and Health and Fitness.

Students will acquire knowledge on fitness and training for sport, lifestyle factors influencing performance, structure of the body and how the systems function and skill acquisition in relation to a sports performance. They will undertake practical activities which allow them to apply their knowledge. Students will also develop a capacity to explain the key components of the Leisure Industry.

AS Level

Unit AS 1 focuses on developing pupils understanding and skills involved with fitness and training. Students will acquire knowledge on fitness and training for sport, lifestyle factors influencing performance, structure of the body and how the systems function and skill acquisition in relation to a sports performance.

Unit AS 2 introduces pupils to key concepts within health, fitness and lifestyle. They study nutrition for health benefits and fitness.

 AS Course Topics

Unit 1 – 60% of AS (24% of A Level)

Fitness and Training for Sport—Components of Fitness, Training Methods, Fitness Testing, Safety and Risk Assessment.

Assessed:  Internal Assessment and Portfolio

 

Unit 2 – 40% of AS (16% of A Level)

The Active Leisure Industry—Health & Fitness; Physical and Psychological aspects, Lifestyle factors, Nutrition and Components of Fitness.

Assessed:  External written examination (2 hours)

 

 

A2 Course Topics

 

Unit 3 – 30%

Event Management in the Active Leisure Industry— Components of Leisure, Research & Analysis, targeting setting, contingency planning and risk assessment.

Assessed: Internal Assessment and Portfolio

 

Unit 4 – 20%

The Application of Science to Sports Performance-Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Skeletal & Muscular systems, Ethics in Sport, Skill Acquisition.

Assessed:  External written examination (2 hours)
